"Egyptian Queen", Frank Frazetta, 1969

“Egyptian Queen”, Frank Frazetta, 1969

Like an old friend that comes to visit every few years, I have dug out my old Frank Frazetta books and wiped off the dust. There they are. The warriors, women and creatures born from a creative mind attached to a body with enough skill to make them come alive through paint and brush. The art of Frank Frazetta is still worthy of conversation,  and there is a lot about the artist and the art that is still to be admired…

Another Still Life Painting, Another Gumball Machine

Sometimes you just can’t get enough, even when it comes to still life painting. Having recently completed still life painting of an old gumball machine, I decided to paint another. This new still life painting is to be a compliment to and part of a set with the previous yellow gumball machine painting…

Make Smarter Paintings By Reading These 15 Quotes About Composition

This article about composition was inspired by this one quote from the late, great Howard Pyle: “After the first hour of work, your lay-in should kill at a hundred yards.”  Whoa! Still Life Painting with Fresh Peppers

“Still Life with Peppers” Craig Shillam, 11″ x 14″, oil/canvas

One of the best parts about “still life painting with fresh peppers” was actually going to a local market and examining all the possibilities in the produce department. When it came down to setting up the actual still life, the peppers were really cooperative models in the process. This painting had a particular purpose, and that purpose was to be part of an auction for the local art association…

Artistic Success – Get Some Help

Success is different for everybody, and as an artist you probably do most things yourself either by choice or by necessity. One thing about success that you can count on is the fact that you are going to need  help at some point, or maybe at every step. This whole idea that an artist can paint away in their studio day after day and then magically get “discovered” and never have to do anything but simply paint is just folly. Put in the work and get some help. Embrace help and make the most of that help…
