Why Should Anyone Buy Original Art?

Why should you or I buy original art? Certainly we all could buy a cheap poster to hang on our wall, or a mass-produced figurine to sit on the end table. Many people do the aforementioned and are quite content. But for those of you who do buy or are thinking of buying original art, there are a host of reasons to feel good about it…

All a person needs is one good reason to make an original art purchase, although there are many. Although I do not have a large original art collection other than my own work that I choose to keep, I have purchased original art and will do so again. I personally buy art for four reasons: I love it, I’m inspired by it, I want a personal connection to the artist or the subject matter, and the desire to possess something with those qualities that  is absolutely unique. I guess I would have to throw in a fifth reason: Can I afford it? I hate when things come down to money!

10 Reasons To Buy Original Art

Buy original art to be inspired. The art that inspires you and profoundly effects you should be hung in your home. The art connects with you in a way not much else can. The connection allows you to share in the passion, expression, creativity and inspiration of the artist who created it.  The art moves you and enhances your life.

Buy original art to simply beautify and enhance your living or work space. The right piece of art and the aesthetic quality that comes with it can change the whole feeling of a room, a home, or an entire building. If you have a place in your life that needs a spark, a new energy, a fresh look or a slap across the face, start  your search today at an art gallery or on the web.

Buy original art for its uniqueness. A one of a kind creation is certainly unique, and the owner would be unique for owning it.  This piece of art can not only be unique for what it looks like, but for what it does to the people who get to experience it. Or, it could be completely personal to you and no one else. A poster just doesn’t do that.

Buy original art to make a statement. Maybe a person wants to show off their art and impress others. A show of success. Why not? People do it everyday with things far less relevant than art. There is no question that owning certain Art can be a status symbol. Original art can also be a part of a person’s legacy, something to leave for others when the time is right.

Buy original art to make a connection with the artist. You can look at an original painting on a wall of an artist who you know of, respect, and admire. You see the brush strokes. You feel the light. The artist probably cares deeply about their work. Maybe you are even close to this artist. The artist is here with you because of that painting.  You support this artist with your patronage. Your support keeps this real life artist creating more fantastic art and getting even better at their craft so somebody else can share in the experience.

Buy original art for purely financial and investment reasons. You are not only investing in the art, but the artist as well. While there is no guarantee, some, but not all art tends to increase in value with time.  That’s a good thing because so many of the items we buy everyday do exactly the opposite. Ever try to sell your stuff at a yard sale? That article of clothing you bought a couple of years ago probably isn’t worth too much now.

Buy original art for intellectual reasons. It’s been said that great or very good art advances our thoughts of who we really are and where we have been. It reminds us of our place in this world, or our own humanity. A certain style or school of art and the artists involved and their attitudes on life may speak directly to you and will not let you go. This art may be ugly to others but to you it’s deeper than the mere surface.

Buy original art and start a collection. People collect all kinds of things. Comic books, die-cast cars, Barbie dolls, etc. I really don’t know why people collect, they just do. The home of a serious art collector is a thing to behold indeed.

Buy original art just because you like it. You want it. It makes you feel good. It may make you smile. You feel it was created just for you…and maybe it was. You walk by it several times a day and you feel that connection.

If none of the above reasons work, you could always buy an original piece of art to match your curtains or go good with your end table.

I know I am an oil painter and biased, but I won’t hold that against me if you won’t…
