Creating Art – Sometimes it’s Roses, Sometimes it’s Weeds

Creating Art - Sometimes its roses and sometimes its weedsCreating Art can be one of the greatest sources of satisfaction life has to offer. It can also cause the exact opposite. When I am creating art, whether it be drawing or painting, or writing for that matter, sometimes it’s a rose, and sometimes it’s a weed and just doesn’t turn out the way I envision it. What about you? Don’t let the weeds you have to walk through stand between you and the scent of a rose…

Creating Art and the Scent of a Rose

Artists have their good days and their bad days just like everybody else. Not everything you create is going to turn out smelling like a rose. But it’s a good day when you have the opportunity create something new. Even if it doesn’t turn out exactly as you envisioned, the fact is you were able to make something that didn’t exist before. And if you only have a short time on a given day to be creating art, you give it your best.

You can increase your chances of having many more roses than weeds by cultivating and working toward the following:

  • You know who you are, what you’re doing, and where your going
  • You know you will have many more successes than failures
  • You know that failures are necessary for greater success
  • You have confidence in your abilities, and know you can improve
  • You are persistent, diligent, and willing to grow

Creating Art in a Garden of Weeds

I can’t begin to tell you how many people have told me “so and so is a good artist, if they would just do it.” Well, they don’t. For whatever reason. So be it. For the ones that do create art on a consistent basis, it is important to weed out any bad habits that can stunt your growth as an artist. Below are a few:

  • Laziness
  • Drug and Alcohol abuse
  • Conceit
  • Not taking chances
  • Giving up and giving in to easily
  • Excuse-i-tis

Creating Art with More Roses than Weeds

The artist evolves, as does the art. Choices are made. Habits are developed. Techniques are formed. There will be more good days than bad, provided you want it to be that way. Keep learning and growing as a person and an artist. Find out who you are deep down inside. Plan, strategize, think, work. Cultivate the art and artist you want to be, and your garden will have many more roses than weeds.
